Are you aware of the risks of unsafe gas appliances?

Gardiner’s Plumbing & Heating Ltd are helping you stay Gas Safe this Gas Safety Week 2023.

gas safety checks

In support of Gas Safety Week (11-17 September 2023), our Gas Safe registered engineers are participating in sharing information and holding discounted gas safety checks to inform the public of gas safety issues and to remind everyone of the importance of staying gas safe as we look towards winter.

This Gas Safety Week focuses on the breadth and diversity of skills, experiences and people who play an essential role in keeping the UK gas safe. As well as, reminding consumers on gas safety and how to ensure they stay safe, including not attempting DIY on gas appliances and being aware of the warning signs of unsafe appliances.

Gas appliances that have not properly been maintained can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Carbon monoxide is known as the ‘silent killer’ because you can’t see, smell or taste it. Therefore, it is highly important to have all of your gas appliances checked every year by an engineer who is listed on the Gas Safe Register.

Tom who owns Gardiner’s Plumbing & Heating Ltd said: "It is our job to make sure that people’s gas appliances are operating safely and efficiently. In some instances, people do not know the signs and symptoms of faulty gas appliances and carbon monoxide poisoning. Because of this, we are supporting Gas Safety Week to remind the public of the seriousness of unsafe gas appliances and how they can keep themselves and their families safe."

Do you feel confident that you know the warning signs of an unsafe gas appliance?

  • 0%Yes! I have my gas appliances checked annually.

  • 0%No, I don't know if my appliances are safe or not.

  • 0%I'm not sure...

DO Check for warning signs that could indicate your (or others) gas appliances are not working correctly. Signs may include lazy yellow /orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, error messages or unexpected noises from your boiler or dark and sooty stains around your gas appliance. Contact your landlord, or, if you own the appliance, a Gas Safe registered engineer to check it. You can contact us on telephone: 01732 321266 or out of office/ emergency number: 07480611887.

What is carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas, which has no taste, colour, or smell. It can make you seriously ill and can kill quickly without warning.

What are the signs of a carbon monoxide leak?

Carbon monoxide is released when gas appliances do not have enough oxygen to burn correctly. Look out for the following signs that could indicate that a gas appliance is not working correctly:

• floppy yellow or orange flame on your gas hob, rather than a crisp blue flame

• dark, sooty staining on or around your gas appliances

• increased condensation inside windows

• the boiler pilot light keeps going out.

What are the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning?

  • Headaches

  • Nausea

  • Dizziness

  • Breathlessness

  • Collapse

  • Unconsciousness

If you're suffering from any of these symptoms and feel better when you leave the house, it could be CO poisoning.

If you're concerned you or someone in your household may be suffering from CO poisoning, make sure you do the following:

• get fresh air immediately

• open all doors and windows, switch off gas appliances and leave the house

• contact your GP, who can check and advise if you need treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning

• if you're concerned there is immediate danger, call the gas emergency helpline on 0800 111 999 (mainland GB), 0800 002 001 (Northern Ireland) or look up the number for your UK region at bit.ly/gasemergency.
